As part of the year 2 of my Games Design course at college, we are going to be making a 3D Environment and Animation. Within these both, decorative meshes will be used to make the environment look more natural by putting items like cups, chairs, and more within the environment to add depth and realism. As preparation for these assignments, I decided to make this 3D modelled mug to practice making models and expand my skill in 3D model creation, the more decorative meshes I make, the more I can fill an environment up with my own assets.
Below is a step by step process of how I made the cup in the picture above, I didn't record the process when I made the original cup, so I recreated it to show the process I took to achieve the cup with a written description of what tools and techniques I used to achieve it.
To make the cup, I had to start off with a shape that resembled the model I was making which was of course a cylinder. Once I placed the shape I then had to reshape the shape to be the size that closely match a cup. Once the size was determined I applied it, this is to prevent issues later on.
Next I inset the top face and extruded the middle face inwards, this was to hollow out the inside of the cup and make the part of the cup where you put liquid. I then moved onto the bottom face to once again inset, but this time to make the base of cup, this was achieved by insetting two times but leaving a bit in the middle which was later on extruded outwards.
To give the cup a more realistic look I curved/bevelled all the appropriate edges such as the rim of the to and bottom of the cup along with the base.
The cup needs a handle to hold it. To do this, I added in a Bezier curve and reshaped it to make a handle shape. I did this by positioning the camera to look down on the curve from the top, I then moved the ends points to make the shape I wanted.
Once the Bezier curve was shaped the way I wanted, I added geometry to it, to give it a presence in the scene and converted it to a mesh. This was to give me options that would not have been accessible had it stayed a curve. I then placed the curve on the cup and joined the two together.
Once the handle was attached the model was complete, to give it a finalised polish look I added a sub division modifier to double the faces and make the mesh look more smooth. I then added materials to the mesh to give it a patterned finish which had a decal picture added on later to give the cup a image.
